Banks in India will remain closed for 16 days in September 2023. This includes national and regional holidays and weekends. In some states, banks will remain shut for Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Maharaja Hari Singh Ji's anniversary, and Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi in September.

Bank Holidays in September

According to the holiday list shared by the Reserve Bank of India, there are 12 official holidays (varying from state to state) during the coming month. Combined with Sundays and alternate Saturday leaves, there are essentially 16 bank holidays in September.

Banks to remain shut for 16 days

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) divides the bank holidays into three sections- Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts. You should take note of the holidays and remember the dates carefully to plan your bank visits accordingly.

Under the Negotiable Instruments Act, RBI has declared bank holidays on September 6, 7, 8, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 25, 27, 28, and 29. Apart from this, there are four Sundays in September, and second, and fourth Saturdays holidays as well.

RBI's September Bank Holiday list

On September 6, Banks will be closed in Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar on account of Sri Krishna Janmashtami. On September 7,  Banks will be closed in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Jammu, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, and Srinagar because of Janmashtami (Shravan Vad-8)/Sri Krishna Ashtami.

Janmashtami Holiday

On September 8, 2023, banks will be closed in Delhi due to the G20 Summit.

G-20 Summit Holiday

On September 18, banks will remain closed in Karnataka and Telangana on account of Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrata/Vinayaka Chathurthi. On September 19, banks will be closed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, and Goa on account of Ganesh Chaturthi/Samvatsari (Chaturthi Paksha). Banks will remain closed in Orissa and Goa on September 20 for Ganesh Chaturthi (2nd day)/Nuakhai.

According to the RBI Bank Holiday List, banks will remain closed in Kerala on September 22 on account of Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day. On September 23, banks will remain closed in Jammu and Kashmir on account of the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji. On September 25,  Banks will remain closed in Assam for Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva

On September 27, banks will remain closed in Jammu and Kerala on account of Milad-i-Sherif (Birthday of Prophet Muhammed). On September 28, due to Eid-E-Milad/Eid-e-Meeladunnabi - (Prophet Mohammad's Birthday) (Bara Vafat), Banks will be closed in Gujarat, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Manipur, Uttara Pradesh, New Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

Eid-E-Milad Bank Holiday

On September 29,  Banks will remain closed in Sikkim, Jammu and Srinagar on account of Indrajatra/Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi.
