About 18 children died in Uzbekistan after allegedly consuming syrup manufactured by Indian pharmaceutical company Marion Biotech, the Uzbekistan Health Ministry has claimed
The Uzbekistan Health Ministry said that the children died as a result of consuming the Dok-1 Max syrup, produced by Noida-based Marion Biotech and imported into Uzbekistan by Quramax Medical. So far, 18 out of 21 children with acute respiratory disease have died after taking the cough syrup
According to reports, the chemical ethylene glycol was found in the Dok-1 Max syrup. The substance is believed to be toxic and can lead to serious changes in a patient's health
Uzbekistan's health ministry said that the syrup was given to the children without a doctor's prescription. It was identified that the children, before being hospitalised, took this syrup at home for 2-7 days, in doses of 2.5 to 5 ml three to four times a day
It is believed that the Doc-1 Max syrup was used by the parents as an anti-cold remedy as the main component of the drug is paracetamol. Parents used the drug either on their own or on the recommendation of pharmacy sellers
Doc-1 Max tablets and syrups were withdrawn from all pharmacies in the central Asian country after the incident occurred. Moreover, seven employees have reportedly been sacked due to negligence
A joint inquiry is being conducted by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) teams and Uttar Pradesh Drugs Controlling and Licensing Authority in the case
Sources in the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) told India Today that this particular syrup is currently not being sold in the Indian market
